How do we use it?

Just imagine being at home, and one of your children gets hurt. He is crying and there is commotion all over the place. You fetch your first aid kit, and you need to fumble around for what you need to use, hoping it will be the right item to use.

This would never happen with Genuine First Aid’s Kits featuring the Easy Access Pockets System. However, this winter has been incredibly trying for our friends up North, with blizzards and below freezing conditions for much of the winter.

May none of you ever be in a situation to have to treat frostbite, but just in case here are four tips to help you in rendering vital assistance. You can read the full article at about.com.

Tips on Treating Frostbite

Once you have thawed the frostbitten tissure, DO NOT allow it to freeze again. The more often tissue freezes and thaws, the deeper the damage. If the victim will soon be exposed to freezing temperatures again, wait to treat frostbite.

NEVER rub or massage frostbitten tissue. Rubbing frostbitten tissue will result in more severe damage.

DO NOT use any heating devices, stoves, or fires to treat frostbite. Victims cannot feel the frostbitten tissue and can be burned easily.

In a pinch, body heat can be used to thaw frostbite. For example, placing frostbitten fingers under the arm.

Posted via web from Genuine First Aid's Posterous

Frostbite is an injury to the body that is caused by freezing. Frostbite causes a loss of feeling and color in affected areas. It most often affects the nose, ears, cheeks, chin, fingers, or toes. Frostbite can permanently damage the body, and severe cases can lead to amputation. The risk of frostbite is increased in people with reduced blood circulation and among people who are not dressed properly for extremely cold temperatures.
Recognizing Frostbite
At the first signs of redness or pain in any skin area, get out of the cold or protect any exposed skin—frostbite may be beginning. Any of the following signs may indicate frostbite:

a white or grayish-yellow skin area

skin that feels unusually firm or waxy

numbness

Get into a warm room as soon as possible.

Unless absolutely necessary, do not walk on frostbitten feet or toes—this increases the damage.

Immerse the affected area in warm—not hot—water (the temperature should be comfortable to the touch for unaffected parts of the body).

Or, warm the affected area using body heat. For example, the heat of an armpit can be used to warm frostbitten fingers.

Do not rub the frostbitten area with snow or massage it at all. This can cause more damage.

Don’t use a heating pad, heat lamp, or the heat of a stove, fireplace, or radiator for warming. Affected areas are numb and can be easily burned.

These procedures are not substitutes for proper medical care. Hypothermia is a medical emergency and frostbite should be evaluated by a health care provider. It is a good idea to take a first aid and emergency resuscitation (CPR) course to prepare for cold-weather health problems. Knowing what to do is an important part of protecting your health and the health of others.
Taking preventive action is your best defense against having to deal with extreme cold-weather conditions. By preparing your home and car in advance for winter emergencies, and by observing safety precautions during times of extremely cold weather, you can reduce the risk of weather-related health problems.
View this for more tips.

A victim is often unaware of frostbite until someone else points it out because the frozen tissues are numb.
What to Do
If you detect symptoms of frostbite, seek medical care. Because frostbite and hypothermia both result from exposure, first determine whether the victim also shows signs of hypothermia, as described previously. Hypothermia is a more serious medical condition and requires emergency medical assistance.
If (1) there is frostbite but no sign of hypothermia and (2) immediate medical care is not available, proceed as follows:

Posted via web from Genuine First Aid's Posterous

Hypothermia

Hypothermia- Also called: Cold-related illness

In cold weather, your body may lose heat faster than you can produce it. The result is hypothermia, or abnormally low body temperature. It can make you sleepy, confused and clumsy. Because it happens gradually and affects your thinking, you may not realize you need help. That makes it especially dangerous. A body temperature below 95° F is a medical emergency and can lead to death if not treated promptly.
Anyone who spends much time outdoors in cold weather can get hypothermia. You can also get it from being cold and wet, or under cold water for too long. Babies and old people are especially at risk. Babies can get it from sleeping in a cold room.

What to Do
Check to make sure the victim is breathing before worrying about hypothermia. One of the first steps in treating a hypothermia victim is to reduce the cold exposure. Moving the victim from the cold and removing wet clothing helps to stop the victim from getting any colder.

Warm the center of the body first—chest, neck, head, and groin—using an electric blanket, if available. Or use skin-to-skin contact under loose, dry layers of blankets, clothing, towels, or sheets.

Warm beverages can help increase the body temperature, but do not give alcoholic beverages. Do not try to give beverages to an unconscious person.

After body temperature has increased, keep the person dry and wrapped in a warm blanket, including the head and neck.

Get medical attention as soon as possible.
Side Tips:
Drinking alcohol increases cold exposure and makes hypothermia worse.
If you are stranded in extreme cold, save your energy. Exertion will just lead to decreased energy and a lower body temperature.

Posted via web from Genuine First Aid's Posterous

Untitled

Hypothermia- Also called: Cold-related illness

In cold weather, your body may lose heat faster than you can produce it. Exertion will just lead to decreased energy and a lower body temperature.

Posted via web from Genuine First Aid's Posterous

Crush Wounds

Minor crush injuries can usually be treated with basic first aid, such as cleaning and bandaging the wound. Medical treatment is needed for a more serious crush injury. This treatment is needed to prevent loss of function, restore circulation to the injured area, and prevent infection. An example of a minor crush injury is getting a finger caught in a door. A crush injury is more serious when it involves a large force, such as a foot being run over by a car.

The crush injury is cleansed with soap and water. If there is bleeding, pressure is applied to control the bleeding. Ice is applied. An x-ray is required to determine if the bone was damaged.

A tetanus shot should be given if the person has not had one in the past 10 years. However, as is all too horribly evident, in many cases such basic facilities just are not available to Haitians in dire need.

For the next few days, we will be posting a multi-part blog which will briefly go over some basic techniques that you can use in the worst of times, when you are the only medical attention present.

Part 1: Puncture Wounds
A puncture wound doesn't usually cause excessive bleeding. Often the wound seems to close almost instantly. But these features don't mean treatment isn't necessary, especially because of the risk of infection.
You can provide assistance for a puncture wound using the following 6 steps:

Stop the bleeding.

Clean the wound. Properly cleaning the wound and removing particles can reduce the risk of tetanus.

Apply the antibiotic (if available).

Cover the wound. Exposure to air speeds healing, but bandages can help keep the wound clean and keep harmful bacteria out.

Change the dressing.

Watch for signs of infection.

Posted via web from Genuine First Aid's Posterous

Untitled

If you suspect shock, take the victim to the nearest hospital emergency room. If this is not possible, call for an ambulance immediately. While waiting for medical help, start
these first aid measures:

Keep the victim lying down and covered with a blanket or coat to maintain warmth.

Do not move the person if injury to the head, neck, or spine may have occurred. Movement can cause further damage and should be done only by trained medical personnel.

In the absence of such injuries, elevate the feet 8 to 10 inches to increase blood flow to the trunk. You can prop the feet on pillows, books, or other such items. If nothing is available, simply hold them up with your hands.

If the person shows signs of a heart attack -- chest pain, difficult breathing, profuse sweating -- do not elevate the feet. Instead, raise the head and shoulders 8 to 10 inches.

If an arm or leg is bleeding severely, apply direct pressure to the wound. Bright red blood that is gushing or spurting indicates an injured artery. If pressing on the wound does not stop the bleeding, apply pressure to the appropriate point along the artery.

If nausea occurs, turn the person's head to one side so that vomiting won't cause choking.

If the victim falls unconscious and is not breathing, maintain an open airway and begin cardiopulmonary resuscitation immediately.

http://www.firstaidtopics.com/shock/
www.genuinefirstaid.com
Posted via web from Genuine First Aid's Posterous

First Aid for Dehydration

What is dehydration?
Dehydration is when the body doesn’t have enough fluid. Children and people over 60 are particularly susceptible to dehydration. Dehydration (from the Greek hydor (water)) and the Latin prefix de- (indicating deprivation, removal, and separation) occurs when more water and fluids are exiting the body than are entering the body.

What causes dehydration?
Under normal conditions, we all lose body water daily through sweat, tears, urine and stool. In a healthy person, this water is replaced by drinking fluids and eating foods that contain water. When a person becomes so sick with fever, diarrhea, or vomiting or if an individual is overexposed to the sun, dehydration occurs. This is caused when the body loses water content and essential body salts such as sodium, potassium, calcium bicarbonate and phosphate.
Occasionally, dehydration can be caused by drugs, such as diuretics, which deplete body fluids and electrolytes. Whatever the cause, dehydration should be treated as soon as possible.
What are the symptoms of dehydration?
The most common symptoms of dehydration (each individual may experience symptoms differently) may include:

thirst, though you do not have to experience thirst to be dehydrated

less-frequent urination

dry skin

dizziness

fatigue

light-headedness

confusion

increased heart rate and breathing

•dry mouth and mucous membranes

In children, additional symptoms may include dry mouth and tongue, no tears when crying, no wet diapers for more than 3 hours, sunken abdomen, eyes, or cheeks, high fever, listlessness, irritability, skin that does not flatten when pinched and released.
Treatment for dehydration:
Dehydration can often be treated at home under a physician's guidance if it’s caught early. In children, directions for giving food and fluids will differ according to the cause of the dehydration, so it is important to consult your pediatrician.
In cases of mild dehydration, simple rehydration is recommended by drinking fluids. Many sports drinks on the market effectively restore body fluids, electrolytes, and salt balance.
For moderate dehydration, intravenous fluids may be required, although if caught early enough, simple rehydration may be effective. Cases of serious dehydration should be treated as a medical emergency, and hospitalization, along with intravenous fluids, is necessary. Immediate action should be taken.
How can dehydration be prevented?
Take precautionary measures to avoid the harmful effects of dehydration, including:

Drink plenty of fluids, especially when working or playing in the sun.

Make sure you are taking in more fluid than you are losing.

Try to schedule physical outdoor activities for the cooler parts of the day.

Drink appropriate sports drinks to help maintain electrolyte balance.

For infants and young children, solutions like Pedialyte will help maintain electrolyte balance during illness or heat exposure.

It's time to get down to brass tacks. This entire site is dedicated to first aid and "first aid" is one of those terms thrown around like everyone out there knows what you're talking about.

Do they?

First aid is a double-duty term. It requires context to really understand what is being talked about since first aid can be the lowliest bit of medical minutia or a truly life-saving intervention.

Cleaning up your kid's skinned knee: first aid.

Reviving Grampa's stopped heart with CPR: also first aid.

How seriously you might take the notion of first aid depends on the type of aid you're referring to. Look up from your laptop and scan the rest of the coffee shop. See the mom sitting at the next table over? Ask her what she would expect to learn if she took first aid training.

Don't tell me. I'm guessing her answer is something about CPR and what to do if you get into a car wreck.

Now turn to your left and ask the guy with one of those blended smoothie things what kind of treatment he would be seeking if he went to the first aid station at a theme park.

Yeah, I know. He said he'd go if he needed a Band-Aid -- or maybe a Rolaid.

So, why do we care? First aid encompasses the front line of every medical condition, big or small, emergent or mundane. It's a good idea to broaden your own definition of first aid when you're thinking about needs and plans.

Seek out first aid training that covers more than emergencies. Plan for medical emergencies by starting with 911, because whatever first aid treatment you perform in a medical emergency, it will need to be followed by professional medical care. Learn to recognize emergencies and to deal with non-emergencies in the most efficient possible way.

What is first aid?

First Aid Training

By Rod Brouhard

Help Haiti

Hello everyone,

I wanted to get in touch with you regarding the earthquake in Haiti and how we can all help be a part of the relief efforts. This is common if the skin starts to heal over the splinter before you get a chance to take it out. It's not a good method if the splinter is deep or the layer of skin is thick (like on the heel your foot).

1. Sterilize the tip of the needle with rubbing alcohol.

2. Find the part where the splinter entered the skin.

3. Stick the needle in ever so slightly.

4. Apply upwards pressure, using the tip of the needle to open the skin right above the splinter. Go a little further, with an upward scraping motion.

5. Pull the skin apart gently and you should be able to see the splinter.

6. Use tweezers to pull it out, if the end is sticking out. Otherwise, you might have to use the needle to gently nudge it out. Get the tip of the needle underneath the splinter and nudge it up very gently. You don't want it to break in your skin. If it does, use the baking soda method immediately to extract it.
- This step requires very steady hands and very good vision.

Tips:

- Don't forget that most small splinters will work their way out of the skin on their own in a few days or a week. Sometimes it's simpler and less harmful to just let your body heal itself. Watch for any sign of infection, though; while unlikely, it is possible.

- To numb the site before pulling out the splinter, put ice around the splinter (but not on it) or briefly put the spot in ice water (but not long enough to make the skin wrinkly). Again, make sure the spot is dry; it'll be harder to use some of the methods if the skin or splinter is moist.

Best,

Genuine First Aid

http://www.genuinefirstaid.com
(To read the rest of the article, click here.)

What is the Easy Access Pocket System?

The Easy Access Pocket System is a patented system for making First Aid Kits and Emergency Preparedness Kits much faster and easier to use, which is vital when there is an emergency and you don't have much time to find out where everything is in your kit.

When an accident or emergency occurs requiring first aid, simply open the kit and take out the pockets. As they are clearly labeled with text and pictures, you can instantly choose and open the pocket that applies to the emergency at hand. The Easy Access Pockets are transparent on the back side, so that you can easily identify the contents at a glance from this side as well. The contents are packed in the kits in such a way as to make them as easy as possible to identify through the transparent sides of the pockets.

When done, you simply close the resealable pocket and put away the kit.

An added benefit of the Easy Access Pocket System is that refills are available for each pocket.

Pull the skin apart gently and you should be able to see the splinter.

*This step requires very steady hands and very good vision.

Tips:

* Don't forget that most small splinters will work their way out of the skin on their own in a few days or a week. It works best if you can see the splinter, and part of it is protruding from the skin.

1. Sterilize the tip of the tweezers with rubbing alcohol.

2. Hold a magnifying glass up the splinter and find the part that's sticking out. Make sure there's good lighting. If it's sticking up (or up at an angle), go to the next step. If it's leaning horizontally (laying down) against the skin, however, don't use this method. You might break the splinter when you try to grab it with the tweezers because of its angle in your skin. Use a needle or nail clippers.

3. Grab the tip of the splinter with the tweezers. Make sure not to grab any hair or skin. Having someone else hold the magnifying glass helps. Don't try to squeeze the splinter to push it further out; you'll tighten your skin's grip on the embedded end and it might break. If you can't grab it without squeezing your skin, try another method.

Pull the splinter out in the direction it went into the skin. For example, if it went in a little sideways, don't pull it straight up or else it'll probably break.

Tips:

Don't forget that most small splinters will work their way out of the skin on their own in a few days or a week. The baking soda paste will cause the skin to swell and push the splinter out. It's best used after other methods, since it will make the other methods (tape, tweezer, needle) more difficult because your skin will be swollen.

The next step is to make a paste using water and about 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda. Put this paste on a bandage and apply the bandage to the affected area.

After 24 hours, remove the bandage. The splinter may be sticking out of the skin. If it's visible, pick it off with tweezers. Rinse the skin gently (if the splinter is sticking out but not visible, this may wash it away). Repeat the method with new paste and another bandage every 24 hours until the splinter is gone.

Tips:
Don't forget that most small splinters will work their way out of the skin on their own in a few days or a week. Sometimes it's simpler and less harmful to just let your body heal itself. Purchase Ichthammol ointment (also known as black drawing salve) over the counter at a pharmacy. They may not have it out on the shelves but if you ask the pharmacist they usually have it in the pharmacy. You do not need a prescription.

Put a small amount of the salve on the splinter and put a bandaid over the salve. In a day remove the bandaid and the splinter will usually be drawn out of your skin into the bandaid. (Be careful not to get the salve on anything as it is very greasy and can stain. The salve has somewhat of an unpleasant odor - similar to a car rear end grease).

Tips:

Don't forget that most small splinters will work their way out of the skin on their own in a few days or a week. Wash and dry the spot with soap and water. Be gentle. Pat dry (a paper towel is good for absorbing moisture without having to apply much pressure). The three classifications of first-degree burn, second-degree burn and third-degree burn will help you determine emergency care:

First-degree burn
 - The least serious burns are those in which only the outer layer of skin is burned. The skin is usually red, with swelling and pain sometimes present. The outer layer of skin hasn't been burned through. Treat a first-degree burn as a minor burn unless it involves substantial portions of the hands, feet, face, groin or buttocks, or a major joint.

Second-degree burn -
When the first layer of skin has been burned through and the second layer of skin (dermis) also is burned, the injury is called a second-degree burn. Blisters develop and the skin takes on an intensely reddened, splotchy appearance. Second-degree burns produce severe pain and swelling.

If the second-degree burn is no larger than 3 inches (7.5 centimeters) in diameter, treat it as a minor burn. If the burned area is larger or if the burn is on the hands, feet, face, groin or buttocks, or over a major joint, treat it as a major burn and get medical help immediately.

For minor burns, including first-degree burns and second-degree burns limited to an area no larger than 3 inches (7.5 centimeters) in diameter, take the following action:

- Cool the burn. Hold the burned area under cold running water for at least five minutes, or until the pain subsides. If this is impractical, immerse the burn in cold water or cool it with cold compresses. Cooling the burn reduces swelling by conducting heat away from the skin. Don't put ice on the burn.

- Cover the burn with a sterile gauze bandage. Don't use fluffy cotton, which may irritate the skin. Wrap the gauze loosely to avoid putting pressure on burned skin. Bandaging keeps air off the burned skin, reduces pain and protects blistered skin.

- Take an over-the-counter pain reliever. These include aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others), naproxen (Aleve) or acetaminophen (Tylenol, others). Never give aspirin to children or teenagers.

Minor burns usually heal without further treatment. They may heal with pigment changes, meaning the healed area may be a different color from the surrounding skin. Watch for signs of infection, such as increased pain, redness, fever, swelling or oozing. If infection develops, seek medical help. Avoid re-injuring or tanning if the burns are less than a year old — doing so may cause more extensive pigmentation changes. Use sunscreen on the area for at least a year.

We hope your Thanksgiving comes and goes burn free this year however it is never a bad idea to be prepared!

Best,

Genuine First Aid

http://www.genuinefirstaid.com

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=18E6DRVJ_eU

(Article taken from Mayo Clinic.)

Chemical Eye Burns

Chemical exposure to your eye can cause personal damage and that is why it is important to flush your eye(s) with drinkable water as soon as possible. Chemicals usually damage the front part of your eye. They can damage tissue, cause pain, redness, tearing, erosion of the surface, or even stick to your eye.

Chemical eye burns can be divided into three categories:

1.Alkali Burns- high pH chemicals cause the most severe injuries to both internal and external parts of the eye.

2. Acid Burns- Though not as severe, these chemicals usually only damage the front of the eye. Blindness is the most common damage done to the cornea from these types of burns.

3. Irritants- Having a neutral pH, these are exactly like they are categorized, irritating.

Most households have harmful chemicals as cleaning products. If your wound isn't in an area that will get dirty or be rubbed by clothing, you usually wouldn’t have to cover it.

If it's in an area that is likely to get dirty (such as your hands or feet) or be irritated by clothing (such as your knees), cover the cut/scrape with a Band-Aid or with sterile gauze and adhesive tape. Change the bandage every day to keep the wound clean and dry.

Some wounds, such as scrapes that cover a large area, should be kept clean and moist to help speed healing and reduce scarring. Bandages used for this purpose are called “occlusive” or “semi-occlusive” bandages. You can buy them in drug stores without a prescription. Your family doctor will tell you if he or she thinks this type of bandage is best for you.

Stay well and be safe!

http://www.genuinefirstaid.com

Not all First Aid Kits are the same. CALL

Check the victim for unresponsiveness. If there is no response, Call 911 and return to the victim. In most locations the emergency dispatcher can assist you with CPR instructions.

2. BLOW

Tilt the head back and listen for breathing. If not breathing normally, pinch nose and cover the mouth with yours and blow until you see the chest rise. Give 2 breaths. Each breath should take 1 second.

3. PUMP

If the victim is still not breathing normally, coughing or moving, begin chest compressions. Push down on the chest 11/2 to 2 inches 30 times right between the nipples. Pump at the rate of 100/minute, faster than once per second.

CONTINUE WITH 2 BREATHS AND 30 PUMPS UNTIL HELP ARRIVES
NOTE: This ratio is the same for one-person & two-person CPR. In two-person CPR the person pumping the chest stops while the other gives mouth-to-mouth breathing.

In a CPR or basic life support (BLS) course, participants practice techniques for determining if breathing or circulation is adequate. If you can't determine whether someone is breathing, you should begin CPR and continue until help arrives.

What do I do if a Small Cut or Scrape is Bleeding?

Bleeding can sometimes be beneficial, in that it helps clean out the wound. Most small cuts or scrapes stop bleeding within a short amount of time. Cuts or scrapes on the head, face or mouth will sometimes bleed a lot as these areas are plentiful in blood vessels.

To stop bleeding, apply firm yet gentle pressure on the cut with a clean cloth, piece of gauze or tissue. If blood soaks through what you're holding over the cut, don't take it off. Simply put more gauze or another cloth on top of what you already have in place and apply more pressure.

If your wound is on an arm or leg, raising it above your heart will also help slow the bleeding.

Stay well and be safe!

http://www.genuinefirstaid.com

(Please note: this is not advice from an actual doctor. If you have a small cut, scrape or puncture wound the a recommended way to clean it is with clean, cool water. You can do this a few different ways, by holding the wound under running water or fill a tub, sink or bowl with cool water and pour it from a cup over the wound.

Use a soft washcloth and gentle soap to clean the skin around the wound. Try to keep the soap out of the wound itself as it’s possible soap will cause irritation. Clean a pair of tweezers in isopropyl alcohol and use them to remove any dirt that remains after washing.

It’s possible that you’ve heard to use a stronger cleansing solution (such as hydrogen peroxide), however these things may irritate wounds. If you have any questions about what's best to use contact your family doctor.

Hope this helps! Aid has been manufacturing and supplying quality First Aid Kits world-wide for over 30 years. Our manufacturing manager, Mr. Conny Blom, invented the “123″ or “ABC” system of quick access to first aid components in an emergency, which was adapted by Red Cross as THE standard for their kits.

It is the signature design of all Genuine First Aid Kits – Easy FAST access to First Aid when it is needed. When designing a kit, our standard question is: “If it was my own family member in need of first aid…… would this kit do the job.” No kit is put into production or sold to the public unless the answer to that question is a resounding “YES”.

For more information feel free to visit http://www.genuinefirstaid.com/!

Genuine First Aid

Phone Number: 866.500.9129
Fax: 727.449.2145
E-Mail: genuinefirstaid@gmail.com
Website: http://www.genuinefirstaid.com/

Genuine First Aid is a company run, managed, and operated by high quality, hardworking individuals who take the utmost pride and care in providing professional first aid products for our clients.
